Caster Semenya, the 18 year old running sensation from a village near Polokwane, has won South Africa's first gold in the women's 800m at the World Championships in Berlin on Wednesday.

Semenya powered away from the field in the final 150m to win by almost 2.5 seconds from second-placed Janeth Jepkosgei of Kenya, the reigning champion.

This was South Africa's first gold medal since Hestrie Cloete won the women's high jump in 2003.
